"These Half-Breeds shouldn't drink liquor" Joseph Charles Van Horne during the 1967 election of New Brunswick.
Here's a nice little quote from Joseph Charles Van Horne during the 1967 election of New Brunswick.
This particular excerpt comes from William Cross and Ian Stewart's 2002 report entitled, "Ethnicity and Accommodation in the New Brunswick Party System." Found in the Winter 2002 edition of the "Journal of Canadian Studies."
The quote was directed toward Van Horne's opposition, Liberal Premier Louis Robichaud, as Robichaud was of mixed Acadian and First Nations blood (see https://www.revolvy.com/…/Charles%20Van%20Horne&item_type=t…).
The quote is as follows:
""These Half-Breeds shouldn't drink liquor," claimed Van Horne. Louis can't take a drink, he has too much Indian in him." (Stanley 172).""
Van Horne recognized the fact that many Acadians (used the plural term “Half-Breeds”) were of mixed-blood and used it to try and tarnish Louis Robichaud’s reputation to try and win the 1967 election of New Brunswick. According to the “Canadian Encyclopedia,” Robichaud was the first elected Acadian Premier of the province of New Brunswick (see http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/…/louis-joseph-robic…/).
Clearly, public discrimination against mixed-blooded Acadians existed long into the 1900s.
